Federal Skilled Trades (FST)

Candidates who apply for permanent residence under the Federal Skilled Trades (FST) program are not assessed on a point system. FST selection is based on the applicant’s qualification in a skilled trade. Skilled trade occupations are NOC level B and are in the major groups of:

(a)   Industrial, electrical and construction trades;

(b)   Maintenance and equipment operations trades;

(c)    Supervisors and technical occupations in natural resources, agriculture and related production;

(d)   Processing, manufacturing and utilities supervisors and central control operators;

(e)   Chefs and cooks; and

(f)     Butchers and bakers.

Eligibility Requirements for FST

In order to make a successful application, candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements.

  • Language: The minimum language requirements are Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level 5 for speaking and listening in English or French, and CLB 4 for reading and writing in English or French;

  • Work experience: Two years of full-time work experience (1,560 hours per year) or equal amount of part-time work experience in an eligible skilled trade occupation within last five years;

  •  Employment requirements: In order to determine whether the candidate has the relevant employment experience and qualifies as a member of FST class, may need trade certification or Canadian work experience.  Trades are provincially or territorially regulated in Canada and therefore may need to obtain trade certification from the province or territory;

  •  Education: There is no education requirement for this class. However, to earn points under Express Entry system, candidates must have Canadian equivalent post-secondary education.
